Application Period for Great Lakes National Scholarship Begins February 15

825 STEM Majors Will Receive $2,500 Each

— At Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation and Affiliates, we work daily to put millions of people on the path to economic security by helping them complete college and successfully repay their student loans.

One of the surest ways for students to achieve financial independence today is to complete a program in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) disciplines. The growth of well-paying jobs in this sector far outpaces the number of STEM majors graduating, creating a great opportunity for students to pursue a rewarding career. Great Lakes supports them with this scholarship as well as other philanthropic investments.

For the fifth consecutive year, Great Lakes Educational Loan Services, Inc. is offering scholarship awards—this year totaling more than $2 million—to help new and continuing students in qualifying STEM majors complete their programs.

Applications are being accepted from February 15, 2016 until April 6, 2016, or until we receive 20,000 applications—whichever comes first. Award recipients will receive a notification email in July. Eligible students must be:

  • A high school senior or graduate, or current postsecondary undergraduate- or graduate-level student.
  • A student who plans to enroll full-time at an accredited, nonprofit public or private two-year or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school in the United States for the entire 2016-2017 academic year.
  • A student with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent).
  • A United States citizen or permanent resident.
  • Able to demonstrate financial need by providing documentation from the most recent tax return filed by the student or student's parents.
  • Enrolled in an eligible major.

Another Initiative to Support STEM Completion

Only about 40 percent of the students who enter STEM programs actually complete them. In 2014, Great Lakes committed $3.2 million over three years to the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL) to improve the quality of STEM undergraduate education. CIRTL is a network of research universities across the country that are training STEM graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in proven teaching and mentoring practices that will help diverse learners stay enrolled in their programs, graduate with STEM degrees, and transition to rewarding careers. Supported by Great Lakes funding, CIRTL is progressing toward its goal of growing to 50+ universities in 2016.
